Everything you need to know about the Great British Insulation Scheme

The Great British Insulation Scheme is another government initiative set to be launched in the summer of 2023. It has been developed to be complementary to ongoing ECO schemes, such as ECO4. We also understand that this initiative is likely to run until March 2026, providing years of support and insulation benefits to homeowners across the United Kingdom.

Am I Eligible for the Great British Insulation Plan?

In an attempt to support a vast majority of homeowners, there are 2 eligibility groups for this scheme, the general group and the low-income group. Here is how they are distinguished.

The General Group:

  • Your home falls within the Council Tax bands A-D in England or A-E in Scotland and Wales
  • Your home has an EPC rating of D or below (request an EPC here)

Upon approval from this group, you can receive a single insulation measure, this may also require a small contribution for the cost of the installation.

The Low-Income Group:

  • Receive means-tested benefits
  • Your home has an EPC rating of D or below

Upon approval from this group, you can receive a single insulation measure.

How will the Great British Insulation Initiative lower my bills?

The ECO schemes and, consequently, this scheme, are all part of a greater net-zero project from the UK government. This is a long-term plan to reduce carbon emissions and eventually get to net zero, with zero carbon emissions released.

The Great British Insulation Scheme will financially support homes with insulation installations. By installing insulation, your home becomes more energy efficient, reducing your energy consumption and, therefore, your bills, every month. This scheme supports various insulation services that contribute to reducing your bills and heat loss.

Insulation services supported by the scheme

Two core types of insulation services are offered by the Great British Insulation initiative, Loft Insulation and Cavity Wall Insulation. These both contribute to reducing energy consumption and homeowner bills every month.

Loft Insulation

Astoundingly, your roof area can lose up to 25% of heat without sufficient insulation. Therefore, by covering this area with quality products, you can save this heat and reduce your reliance on energy-consuming appliances. Loft insulation keeps your property warm, wastes less energy, reduces your energy bills and lowers your carbon emissions output.

Cavity Wall Insulation

This form of insulation is also supported by the Great British Insulation Scheme. By insulating your cavity walls, you can reduce heat loss by up to 33%, and start to save significant money every month on your energy bills.

Insulating cavity walls is the process of filling the gap between your exterior walls (the cavity). Most homes built post-1920 should have cavity walls, therefore, they provide an excellent area to insulate and benefit from.
